About RemPlex: Leadership

The RemPlex leadership team has decades of experience in multiple aspects of the environmental remediation of complex sites. Based at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), the team facilitates collaboration and knowledge sharing among researchers, site managers, regulators, and other stakeholders worldwide. 

Executive Team

David Peeler is the deputy sector manager for Environmental Management programs, including science-based solutions for Hanford Site cleanup.

Director: David Peeler, PhD

PNNL’s research for remediation of subsurface contamination, radioactive waste processing, and the environmental effects of energy development. With over 30 years of experience in the EM mission space, David’s focus is on providing innovative and strategic solutions that reduce risk, improve operational efficiency, or resolve operations challenges.

Carolyn Pearce is the Deputy Director of RemPlex.

Deputy Director: Carolyn Pearce, PhD

Carolyn joined RemPlex in March 2026. Her geochemistry research focuses on the characterization of minerals relevant to radioactive waste storage and processing with the aim to determine reaction mechanisms and kinetics that affect radionuclide stability in waste forms and subsurface environments. She also is director of the Ion Dynamics in Radioactive Environments and Materials (IDREAM) Energy Frontier Research Center, led by PNNL for the Department of Energy's Office of Basic Energy Sciences in the Office of Science. She holds appointments with Washington State University and the University of Manchester, United Kingdom.

Christian Johnson is a senior software developer specializing in environmental science applications.

Operations Director: Christian D. Johnson

A chemical engineer by training, Chris has been in the field of environmental restoration/remediation technology since 1992. As a senior development engineer, his research spans remediation technology development and applications, groundwater modeling, and environmental data analysis and visualization—including SOCRATES, RT3D, SVEET, and other computational tools. He has been involved in RemPlex since 2020 and held other professional roles such as 2024 Washington Hydrogeology Symposium chair.
