Local Geology Field Tour
Understanding the local geology is crucial for addressing the remediation challenges at the Hanford Site. This 4-hour tour will explore the geological history, processes, features, and materials in the Hanford Site area, with a special focus on their relation to the fate and transport of contaminants and their remediation in the vadose zone and groundwater.
Participants will learn about the site’s stratigraphy and structure, such as the Columbia River Basalts, the Pasco Basin, the Plio-Pleistocene Ringold Formation, and the Pleistocene Missoula flood deposits. The tour will be led by George Last, a renowned expert on Hanford's local geology and a former Pacific Northwest National Laboratory scientist. Last has over 40 years of experience in applied geology and hydrogeologic research, and has expertise in geologic controls over contaminant transport, hydrogeology, quaternary geology, and site characterization and remediation. The tour will include three stops along the Columbia River and promises to be highly informative and engaging, offering unique insights into the important work being conducted at the Hanford Site.
The morning tour will run from 8:00 a.m. to noon and the afternoon tour will run from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. The tour will involve limited walking on graveled and uneven surfaces. This is an add-on activity with a separate fee of $35—sign up for the tour while registering for the Global Summit. Details about transportation and safety guidelines will be provided closer to the tour date.
