Reducing threats, saving lives
Reducing threats, saving lives
PNNL’s fundamental and applied research in radiation detection and nuclear sciences is bolstering the nation’s nuclear deterrent, reducing global threats, and solving energy security challenges. Our capabilities span multiple research areas, including detection and interdiction technology, nuclear materials development and forensics, ultra-sensitive nuclear measurements, radiological emergency response, and nuclear safeguards and verification.
Our expertise in material nuclear forensics and archaeology is derived from the region’s legacy where two-thirds of the U.S. plutonium stockpile were produced. Today, our scientists and engineers are involved in advanced research into signatures science related to the nuclear fuel cycle. Our science and technology helps prevent and reduce the proliferation of nuclear and radiological materials by making them easier to detect.
PNNL develops some of the world’s most sensitive radiation detection systems for national security applications, fundamental physics research, and environmental science. This research, with support from the Department of Energy (DOE) National Nuclear Security Administration and the DOE Office of Science, has developed increasingly sensitive nuclear measurements to discover, measure, and characterize rare physical events.
We are developing new methods and systems for radiological emergency response, including advanced analytics for aerial surveys of contaminated areas and monitoring systems that can operate unattended in the field for weeks. Our research and development is saving lives by driving new capabilities in emergency response to deliver more timely and actionable information to decision makers.
PNNL plays a key role in revitalizing and sustaining new safeguard systems, technologies, and nuclear infrastructure worldwide. Our work is critical in advancing international nuclear nonproliferation efforts. These activities aim to reduce global nuclear threats; detect, identify, secure, and eliminate nuclear materials; and strengthen and sustain the international safeguards system as it evolves to meet new challenges. Through our leading radiation and nuclear detection expertise and technologies, we are uniquely positioned to help secure borders around the globe.
Our world-class testing and evaluation capabilities help transition new radiation detection technologies into nuclear security operations—both domestically and internationally. We have decades of experience fielding and maintaining operational radiation detection equipment in various mission areas for both the DOE and the Department of Homeland Security. We understand what it takes to successfully make radiation detection technologies work in the real world.
