PNNL Researchers Land on 2023 Highly Cited List
Among all scientists and social scientists, highly cited researchers are 1 in 1,000
More than a dozen scientists from the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) have been named among the world’s most influential researchers on Clarivate’s 2023 Highly Cited Researchers List.
Highly cited researchers demonstrate significant and broad influence in their field of research, which is reflected in their publication of multiple highly cited papers over the last decade. Clarivate, a data analytics firm that specializes in scientific and academic research, produces the annual list, drawn from the highly cited papers that rank in the top 1 percent of citations for each field and publication year in the Web of Science citation index.
Sixteen individuals are currently affiliated with PNNL and the Department of Energy, one of which qualified for the list in multiple fields of study.
In total, 10 on the highly cited list are part of PNNL’s Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate, five are associated with the Energy and Environment Directorate, and one resides within the National Security Directorate.
Also on the list is a university researcher who is a joint appointee with PNNL.
An exclusive group
Of the world’s population of scientists and social scientists, highly cited researchers are 1 in 1,000, according to Clarivate.
The methodology that determines the “who’s who” of influential researchers draws on the data and analysis performed by bibliometric experts and data scientists at the Institute for Scientific Information at Clarivate.
“The Highly Cited Researchers List identifies and celebrates exceptional individual researchers at PNNL whose significant and broad influence in their fields translates to impact in their research community and innovations that make the world healthier, more sustainable, and more secure,” said David Pendlebury, head of research analysis at the Institute for Scientific Information at Clarivate. “Their contributions resonate far beyond their individual achievements, strengthening the foundation of excellence and innovation in research.”
Worldwide, this year’s 7,127 highly cited researcher designations are issued to 6,849 individuals. The number of awards exceeds the number of unique individuals because some researchers are receiving recognition in more than one essential science indicators field of research.
