Dr. Mark Engelhard is a senior research chemist with the Biogeochemical Transformations team in PNNL’s Environmental Molecular Sciences Division and the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) user program. Since 1980, Engelhard’s research has involved advancing and utilizing surface sensitive techniques, particularly X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), to study surface and interphase chemistry. He has worked as principal investigator and scientist on fundamental and applied research projects that involve collaborations with academic, government, and industrial partners.  

Based on this work and use of specially developed sample handling and processing capabilities associated with XPS systems, Engelhard is author or co-author to over 590 peer reviewed scientific publications (Web of Science Hirsch index 90/Google Scholar Hirsch index 101) and was named as a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate Analytics 2018 – 2020. He has authored or co-authored five book chapters and more than 13 technical reports, and has edited three special journal volumes for the AVS journal Surface Science Spectra. Engelhard’s total sum of publication citations is over 38,800 for Web of Science and over 40,000 for Google Scholar.
