Designing Multi-Benefit Transmission Corridors: A Participatory Workshop
University of Pennsylvania | August 15, 2025

On August 15th, a participatory workshop at the University of Pennsylvania will bring together a multidisciplinary group of interested participants to explore this potential of novel multi-functional arrangements and designs for the typology of multi-benefit transmission corridors. The workshop will identify novel opportunities and potential benefits associated with layered, integrated multi-benefit transmission corridors; make the benefits of layered infrastructure legible to users and communities through novel experiences and a curation of spatial design sequences; and explore landscape principles for the design of innovative high-performing and multi-functional multi-benefit transmission corridors. Energy Landscapes: The Potential of Transmission Corridors for Recreation, Resilience, and Ecology

Landscape Architecture Foundation | April 9, 2025
During this webinar hosted by the Landscape Architecture Foundation and emceed by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) joint appointee and University of Oregon professor of landscape architecture Yekang Ko, PNNL researchers Chris Henderson and Katie Morrice and professional landscape architect Jonah Susskind shared new thinking and case study examples of multifunctional transmission line corridors from three distinct but integrated perspectives: recreational use, wildfire resilience, and ecosystem restoration and management. The panel then discussed emerging areas for future enterprises and new cross-disciplinary efforts to enable multifunctional transmission with a particular focus on existing and potential roles for landscape architects and planners. More than 500 people attended the webinar. Watch the recording and download the slides.
Configuring the Energy Layer

Council of Educators on Landscape Architecture | March 28, 2025
Rebecca O’Neil joined landscape architecture academics Nicholas Pevzner, from the University of Pennsylvania, and Yekang Ko, from the University of Oregon, as well as professional landscape architect Jasper Hugtenburg in a panel discussion during the CELA 2025 Annual Conference to explore how landscape design is advancing energy infrastructure projects. The panelists discussed different approaches for enhancing energy deployment techniques at scale. The conversation addresses the urgent need for landscape architecture to support this monumental shift and tackle associated challenges for seamless integration into the larger landscape. Transmission and Trails: Energy Planning for Recreation, Ecosystems, and Communities

American Trails | March 20, 2025
PNNL researchers Katie Morrice, Chris Henderson, and Dan Boff presented to the American Trails organization to share findings, case studies, and best practices. They discussed how co-locating recreational amenities with transmission infrastructure can enhance economic conditions, support public recreation goals, and improve local wildlife habitat and ecosystems. The webinar was attended by representatives from federal, tribal, and local government agencies, nonprofits, and planning firms. Watch the recording and download the slides.
