Marine Energy

The Ocean Dynamics Modeling group uses numerical modeling to improve marine renewable energy resources, including offshore wind, tidal energy, and wave energy. Researchers also use modeling techniques to study how waves are affected by sea ice.

Simulated significant wave height on the U.S. West Coast using a multi-resolution, nested grid modeling approach, which employs two widely used third-generation phase-average wave models, WaveWatch III and unstructured SWAN. The high-resolution wave hindcast outputs are openly available to the public through the Amazon Web Services and can be used to support WEC farm development and siting.
