Science and Technology Roadmap
- Sensing and Sensemaking: This includes determining the optimal observation points in a complex system, building sensors that observe key indicators and adapt to shift sensing parameters based on external conditions, and using observations to determine off-normal conditions.
- Real-Time Decision Support: Algorithmic development leveraging PNNL expertise in graph theory, data sciences, and machine learning takes system observations and forecasts the possible outcomes of system perturbations or system maneuvers aimed at increasing resiliency in real-time. This includes the necessary coordination between subsystems and the algorithmic transparency, or explainability, so that humans can increase their confidence over time that autonomic processes will safely operate within their set boundaries.
- Proactive System Maneuvers: The development of modern and flexible controls that can execute system-level changes (maneuvers) with enough fidelity and pervasiveness across a system to influence how it behaves in adverse conditions, how it rebuilds after a fault, or how it maneuvers to make it more hostile for an uninvited adversary.
