Biography

Dawn Wellman, PhD, is director of the Earth Systems Science Division in the Energy and Environment Directorate at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

Her scientific expertise is in understanding and predicting contaminant transport pathways and kinetics, aqueous and mineral surface geochemistry, and reaction kinetics for environmental remediation. In this capacity she became a leader in developing and implementing systems-based approaches for characterizing, monitoring, and remediating contaminated groundwater and soil at sites throughout the DOE complex, as well as internationally, supporting site contractors and site owners. 

In 2009, Dr. Wellman served as Chief Scientist for the DOE Office of Environmental Management in the Office of Groundwater and Soil Remediation. From 2011 to 2013, she served as the lead for the joint PNNL-Savannah River National Laboratory team responding to contamination issues at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan and as technical program manager for DOE’s Deep Vadose Zone Applied Field Research Initiative. 

Dr. Wellman was the PNNL sector manager for the Environmental Health and Remediation (EH&R) market sector from 2012 to 2019, upon which time she moved to the role of Division Director for Earth Systems Science. As Division Director, she leads the organization in integrating scientific understanding, systems engineering, and decision analytics to enable our nation’s energy independence and security, protect national interests and critical infrastructure, remediate complex environmental systems, and improve resilience of environmental systems in response to extreme events. 

She holds a bachelor of science in chemistry from the University of North Dakota and a doctoral degree in chemistry from Washington State University. Dr. Wellman originally joined PNNL in 2002.
