Enhancing capabilities and
enabling greater scientific impact
Joint appointments between PNNL and other research institutions provide new and diverse opportunities for researchers to expand their knowledge and impact. This joint appointment program creates a pathway for researchers to contribute unique capabilities that advance the scientific missions of both institutions. This distinctive opportunity allows for collaborations and impact that would not be possible outside of this formalized framework.
Incoming and outgoing appointments elevate the scientific impact and productivity of researchers at both institutions by:
- fostering collaborative research;
- deepening and broadening capabilities;
- facilitating transdisciplinary research;
- providing access to specialized instrumentation and other research tools; and
- giving students and interns new educational and training opportunities.
PNNL's active and growing joint appointment program includes more than 200 researchers from over 60 university and non-profit research institutions in the United States and abroad.
Current partner institutions are shown below; see the Joint Appointees webpage for a complete list of participating researchers.

Joint appointments are typically initiated out of existing connections or collaborations between researchers at PNNL and faculty at partner universities. Formalized appointments are jointly approved by both institutions.
