PNNL: where impact and
innovation converge
Impacting and investing in the future, both from a scientific and economic standpoint, starts today. While PNNL is known for contributing science and technology to address national challenges, what’s not as well-known are our significant contributions to the local, regional, state, and national economy.
In FY 2020, PNNL conducted $1.1 billion (B) in scientific research, drawing upon signature capabilities in chemistry, Earth sciences, and data analytics. Our total economic output was $1.59B.
In a year of unprecedent challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic we also:
- Generated 7,580 jobs through our operations in the state
- Employed 4,997 scientists, engineers, and support professionals who work at PNNL; 89.8 percent live in Washington state
- Avoided furloughs and instead, hired 371 new staff and provided 521 internship opportunities
- Spent $297M on goods and services
- Contributed more than $1M of community investments and assistance, much of that toward pandemic-related relief efforts to communities in Washington State.
We remain the single largest employer in the Tri-Cities region and are one of the largest employers in Eastern Washington, with a growing presence in Seattle and on the Olympic Peninsula.
Where scientific innovation and economic impact meet, you’ll find PNNL. Now, more than ever, it’s important for us to contribute as a vital component of our state’s economy.
