Publications and Resources
The Federal Energy Management Program’s (FEMPs) Healthy Building Toolkit draws from an extensive review of previous studies and reports about healthy building practices.
Existing healthy building resources overview
This document explores some of the most impactful resources to help building owners and operators understand more about buildings that are both healthy and energy efficient. Download the overview.
Fort Worth case study
In March 2020, PNNL and FEMP partnered with the General Services Administration (GSA) to pilot the Healthy Buildings Toolkit framework at a federal office building in Fort Worth, Texas. PNNL calculated a potential $0.88 per sq.ft. per year financial gain for improving indoor environmental quality in this building and identified building improvement measures that could be used to achieve this gain. Download the results from the Fort Worth pilot.
PNNL case study
In 2019, in support of FEMP, PNNL piloted the Healthy Buildings Toolkit framework at its Richland, Washington campus with two buildings representing extremes within the campus building stock (new construction vs. legacy buildings). The research team identified improvement opportunities that could result in energy savings and personnel gains across both buildings. Download the results from the PNNL pilot.
GSA case studies
FEMP partnered with the GSA to test how well the framework could use building data from automation systems, sensors, and other existing sources instead of requiring in-person data collection. Download the results from the remote pilot on four GSA buildings. More of FEMP's Healthy Building Toolkit case studies in collaboration with GSA are coming soon!
Integrating health and energy efficiency in health care facilities
This overview explores existing research between indoor environmental quality and occupant health and well-being in health care facilities to help property owners and managers understand health and energy-efficiency considerations. This is a scoping study for potential Healthy Building Toolkit health care facility pilot projects and methodology enhancements in fiscal year (FY) 2021. Download the report here.
Integrating health and energy efficiency in multifamily buildings
This overview explores existing research between indoor environmental quality and occupant health and well-being in multifamily buildings to help property owners and managers understand health and energy-efficiency considerations. This is a scoping study for potential Healthy Building Toolkit multifamily residential pilot projects and methodology enhancements in FY 2021. Download the report here.
Overview of industry research on LED lighting technology
This report explores existing research and claims about LED technology and its application in the federal sector. Lighting’s effects on human health, comfort, and productivity are among the most complex issues facing healthy buildings. This document shines some light on those issues. Download the report.
