Aquatic Research Laboratory

Specialized facilities are essential to the advancement of PNNL’s sponsored research programs and LDRD-funded projects.

Unique facilities at PNNL, including dedicated laboratories for power grid operations, marine sciences, data analytics, and atmospheric sciences, equip researchers to take on some of the most challenging questions, and expand the frontiers of scientific understanding and technological possibility.

In addition to more than two dozen state-of-the-art facilities supporting the laboratory’s missions in scientific discovery, energy resiliency, and national security, PNNL is the steward of two U.S. Department of Energy national scientific user facilities, ARM and EMSL, serving more than 2,000 researchers worldwide each year.

Rapid Prototyping Lab

The Rapid Prototyping Lab at PNNL is a makerspace, where a skilled team of engineers and technologists work in the lab, directly with clients, to design and produce relatively inexpensive prototype components for research projects.

Thermal Energy Storage System

TESS makes ice and provides timely cooling to a building. This capability helps researchers identify new techniques for building efficiency, grid reliability, and transactive and clean energy.

Virtual Event Studios

PNNL’s Programmatic Events Office supports a wide variety of event and logistical needs—whether virtual or in person—by managing two full-service, on-site production studios.

Wasteform Development Laboratory

Researchers in this lab investigate glass, glass-ceramic, grout, metal, and metal-ceramic wasteforms that will withstand corrosion over geologic time. This includes supporting the nation's nuclear waste vitrification efforts at Hanford.
