Nuclear forensics involves the characterization of materials associated with pre-detonation and post-detonation nuclear or radiological incidents, to support decision-makers in preventing, mitigating, and attributing nuclear or radiological events.

Investment Aims:

  • Update the material analysis process for nuclear forensics to decrease analysis timelines
  • Create a larger, more robust, and more internationally recognized nuclear forensics capability
  • Develop methods to identify and extract microsamples from bulk material, and optimize chemical processing steps in real time
  • Employ data processing and artificial intelligence advances to identify and report data more quickly than previously available
