Energy Storage Siting and Permitting Outreach Workshop

In March 2026, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) experts convened a cohort of 17 state and regional stakeholders from across the country for a daylong workshop focused on building a shared understanding of energy storage technologies and key considerations regarding their impacts on the grid and local communities. The participants represented a spectrum of backgrounds and perspectives, including community groups, research organizations, local government officials, project developers, and utilities.
Workshop sessions covered a range of topics, including an overview of energy storage technologies, grid uses and benefits, interconnection and regulatory processes, battery safety standards and practical risk management, and community engagement strategies and approaches. Participants also visited PNNL’s cutting-edge Grid Storage Launchpad for hands-on exposure to energy storage research and development.
