Through the Energy & Environment Diversity Internship Program (EEDIP), Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is helping build a diverse future workforce in environmental and clean energy science. If you are an undergraduate or graduate student who is passionate about environmental and clean energy science and is ready to help make the world a better place while gaining valuable research experience to launch your career, this internship is a great opportunity for you!
During your 10–12-week paid internship, you’ll gain hands-on experience and be mentored by a leading expert in the field of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, systems engineering, data science, computer science, cybersecurity, materials science, coastal science, or chemistry. Under their guidance, you’ll work on important projects and experience firsthand how PNNL addresses some of our nation’s toughest problems in nuclear science, systems engineering, electricity infrastructure, and more. You'll also discover exciting careers in energy and environmental science at PNNL, at other Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratories, and across the national energy and environment enterprise.
Interns with PNNL's EEDIP serve all of the five divisions within the Energy and Environment Directorate: Coastal Sciences Division, Earth Systems Science Division, Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division, Energy Processes and Materials Division, and Nuclear Sciences Division.
Live the Gold Experience
An additional benefit of this internship is that you will be invited to participate in PNNL’s Gold Experience—an enhanced model and method for delivering an internship experience that embraces PNNL’s core values of collaboration, courage, integrity, and creativity. You’ll stay connected to PNNL, fellow interns, and your mentors via the following activities:
- Comprehensive onboarding (remote), including new-hire meet and greets
- Enrichment activities, including virtual games, coffee breaks, and monthly mingles
- Monthly seminars and discussions with mentors
- Monthly e-newsletters.
As one of 17 national laboratories and one of the largest STEM employers in the Northwest, PNNL is dedicated to training the next generation of scientists and furthering DOE’s mission in science education and diverse workforce development. Competitive internship opportunities like this are one way we satisfy that goal. Many students return for multiple internships and successfully apply for full-time positions after their college graduation.
