Method of Making Tapered Capillary Tips with Constant Inner Diameters
A novel procedure for fabricating silica emitters for electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) has been developed. Conventionally, to create a silica emitter, a fused silica capillary is heated and pulled until the capillary breaks, causing the I.D. and O.D. of the capillary to taper down to a small aperture several micrometers in diameter. While these small emitters can be used to produce stable electrospray at low flow rates (
Method and Apparatus for selective Capture of Gas Phase Analytes Using Metal Beta-Diketonate Polymers
We have demonstrated for the first time the selective capture of explosives in the gas phase on metal beta-diketonate polymers (see attached in-press publication). We are now incorporating these polymers into analytical formats such as SPME, capillary column coatings, bundled capillary interfaces, and sorbent sampling cartridges. The proof-of-principle experiment below focuses on SPME sampling. Experiments to investigate a variety of other formats are in progress. Our eventual goal is to incorporate the most promising formats into field-portable analytical systems.

Low Pressure Electrospray Ionization System and Process for Effective Transmission of Ions
Achieving high sensitivity in electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) is the key to effective analysis of complex biological sample. Every significant improvement in ESI-MS detection limit will enable applications otherwise impractical. Advances in ESI-MS sensitivity can also increase the dynamic range over which quantitative measurements can be performed. Currently, most sensitivity loss in ESI-MS is in the atmospheric pressure ESI interface region. The ion transmission through this interface is essentially limited by the small MS sampling inlet (typically 400 to 500 ƒÝm in diameter as required to maintain a good vacuum pressure in MS analyzer chamber) resulting in a
Medical Isotope Generator Systems
A prototype automated dual-column medical isotope generator system and the necessary separation chemistry have been developed for the production of Y-90 from a generator column containing Sr-90 source. The system enables hands-free "milking" of Y-90 from Sr-90 in a two-column, two-reagent system. The prototype instrument is capable of recovering > 95% of yttrium tracer within 10mL of product elution volume. Furthermore, the Y-90 eluting solution has been shown to be compatible with subsequent labeling step using a chelator.
Hooked Differential Mobility Spectrometry Apparatus and Method Therefore
The invention discloses a method and device for improved interfacing of Differential Mobility Spectrometers (DMS) and, in particular, Field Asymmetric waveform Ion Mobility Spectrometers (FAIMS) to subsequent instrument stages. Those stages may include mass spectrometry (MS), ion mobility spectrometry (IMS), and their combination (IMS/MS) to which FAIMS has been coupled in the prior art, but not limited thereto. The invention has been reduced to practice and is particularly intended for coupling FAIMS devices of planar geometry well-known in the art, where an overall sensitivity gain due to improved efficiency of ion transmission to a following MS or IMS stage has been demonstrated. The invention is primarily designed for coupling to subsequent slit aperture and particularly slit aperture/ion funnel interfaces, but may also be used in conjunction with other MS interfaces and/or with apertures of rectangular, circular, and other geometries. In another aspect, the present disclosure allows a more compact design and convenient operation of FAIMS/MS and FAIMS/IMS systems.
Method of Measuring Luminescence of a Material
A method of measuring luminescence of a material is disclosed. The method includes applying a light source to excite an exposed material. The method also includes amplifying an emission signal of the material. The method further includes measuring a luminescent emission at a fixed time window of about 10 picoseconds to about 10 nanoseconds. The luminescence may be radio photoluminescence (RPL) or optically stimulated luminescence (OSL).

Systems and Methods for Free Space Optical Communication
We have adapted a variation of wavelength modulated (WM) spectroscopy to develop a long distance free space optical communications (FSOC) technique that is resistant to both atmospheric turbulence and atmospheric visibility changes ¡V two key parameters that currently limit FSOC implementation. The technology uses long wave infrared (LWIR) because this wavelength transmits best through fog, etc and cannot be seen by human bystanders. The technology uses quantum cascade laser (QCL) wavelength modulation (WM) to toggle between two bit states +1 and -1, and uses our patented intensity normalization routine to further cancel turbulence noise. The (+1, -1) bit protocol eliminates false 0 bit readings caused by turbulence induced intensity fluctuations. The bit error rate (BER) of our novel system will be extremely low, and the transmit distance should be at least 20 km.
SYSTEM AND METHOD OF DETECTING AND ANALYZING A THREAT IN A CONFINED ENVIRONMENT
A system and method of detecting and analyzing a threat in a confined environment is disclosed. An audio board detects and analyzes audio signals. A RF board transmits the signals for emergency response. A battery provides power to the audio board and the RF board. The audio board includes a microcontroller with at least one band-pass filter for distinguishing between a threat and a non-threat event and for measuring or counting pulses if the event is a threat.
