Our Work

The Energy Technology Group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) supports the Department of Energy (DOE) by conducting program impact evaluations aligned with the Government Performance and Results Acts of 1993 and 2010. These evaluations use structured metrics to assess technology development, commercialization, deployment, and energy/environmental benefits.

Highlights of PNNL’s Efforts

  • Decades of Expertise: PNNL has been involved in technology tracking for nearly 40 years.

  • Cross-Functional Technology Research: PNNL has produced technology tracking reports across a variety of technology spaces, including the following:
    • Advanced materials and manufacturing
    • Bioenergy
    • Buildings
    • Hydrogen and fuel cells
    • Geothermal
    • Vehicles
    • Wind
  • Extensive Investigations:

    • Over 5,000 DOE-funded research and development (R&D) projects
    • Identified 1,500 pre-commercial technologies and 600 commercial technologies

What We Collect

The Technology Tracking Team gathers information on technologies created from DOE-funded R&D projects. Information collected includes the following:

  • Technology Background: Development and funding timeline, developer and key collaborators or partners, commercialization status, applications, capabilities, and benefits.
  • Associated Outputs: Publications, presentations, and patents.
  • Econometric Data for Impact Evaluation:
    • DOE contract details (Funding Opportunity Announcement, award number, initial funding amount and year)
    • Follow-on funding
    • Technology-generated revenues (if available)
    • Employment statistics
