Software Engineering
IrrigationViz has two main components: The PNNL-supported, web-based dashboard where information is organized and presented to the user, and the Idaho National Laboratory-supported analytic decision support engine that is used to produce the high-level estimates.
PNNL’s software engineers apply industry best practices to design and implement operational solutions and develop high-quality, scalable tools. Working closely with experts in user interface design, PNNL’s team is able to make big, complex data—such has that derived from public geographic information systems—useful through the application of skillful visual design, compelling human-computer interaction, and sound analytic methods.
For IrrigationViz, PNNL’s development team conducted over one hundred interviews to inform the design of the intuitive interface so that a wide variety of users—from engineers and policy makers, to farmers—can use the tool to effectively explore the costs and benefits of irrigation modernization. The team continues to work with irrigation districts to identify and design the right set of features so that IrrigationViz continues to be relevant and useful to those using it most.
