The Center for AI @ PNNL is driving a research agenda that explores the foundations and emerging frontiers of artificial intelligence, combining capability development and application to mission areas in science, security, and energy resilience.

Harnessing the Power of AI Through Advanced Computing, Mathematics, and Data

PNNL researchers are developing a computational infrastructure that applies machine reasoning to complex problems in chemistry, energy, national security, and more.

Operational AI

PNNL is fundamentally a research institution, but teams here also build and deploy technology, including operational artificial intelligence. Through the Center for AI at PNNL, we are developing AI-engineering expertise. These AI engineers contribute to teams that are advancing scientific discovery and security.

AI for Biological Science

Biologists have used machine learning for decades, but current models are only able to understand a fraction of the data generated by experiments. Experts at PNNL are developing the next generation of artificial-intelligence tools to help with the scientific-reasoning process, such as biology-informed machine learning to integrate large-language models with experimental data.

Using AI to grow next-generation materials

PNNL researchers are developing artificial intelligence tools to accelerate the pace of material growth experiments, and ultimately, the design of next-generation materials.
