Special Applications
Another benefit of marine energy technology is their ability to provide services under unique contexts, which we term “special applications” in this project. For example, marine energy could provide electric resiliency for coastal communities.
Distributed energy resources can support resiliency objectives if properly enabled, in particular, to address identified vulnerabilities. Marine energy devices integrated with coastal microgrids could support resilience improvement measures for isolated coastal communities as well as for high-priority coastal loads. Further, appropriately designed, scaled and strategically located marine renewable energy arrays could help power grids become more resilient by diversifying energy sources and by providing essential back-up and black-start services.
