January 26-28, 2020: Pan-American Marine Energy Conference
Dhruv Bhatnagar presented on Island and Remote Grid Considerations for Marine Energy Development at the 2020 Pan-American Marine Energy Conference in San Jose, Costa Rica in January of 2020. Informed by the experience of the Faroe Islands and the Hawaiian Islands, this work engaged stakeholders, surveyed literature and examples of successful marine energy development, and utilized technology expertise to characterize the technology limitations, financial experiences and policy challenges that present barriers to marine energy development. It developed technology, financial and policy considerations that are informative for technology developers, local utilities, and regulatory and government agencies in island and remote communities to spur marine energy development. These stakeholders have limited bandwidth and ability to explore these considerations on their own. This effort seeks to provide them a resource to do so. December 16, 2019: International Energy Agency - Ocean Energy Systems
In December of 2019, Rebecca O’Neil presented the project at an online workshop facilitated by the International Energy Agency through Ocean Energy Systems (IEA-OES). The workshop brought together research projects from around the world investigating potential system benefits of integrating marine energy into established power systems. Research focuses within this topic include temporal offsetting of marine resource with wind and solar generation, impacts on large scale power system balancing and the potential additional benefits that marine energy can bring for regions moving towards net-zero carbon targets. The discussion included further opportunities for sharing data, methodologies and lessons learned and opportunities for future collaboration between participants.
