Genesis Mission

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is a key partner in the Department of Energy (DOE) Genesis Mission, which is developing a powerful AI platform to accelerate scientific discovery, drive energy innovation, and strengthen national security.

Genesis Mission

(Department of Energy)

PNNL’s unique science leadership, AI and data expertise, and user facilities enable us to shape, lead, and engage across all aspects of the Genesis Mission.

About the Genesis Mission

The Genesis Mission brings together DOE national laboratories to create transformative AI models and computing capabilities. It is arranged in the following five pillars that integrate capabilities and missions of DOE and the National Nuclear Security Administration:

  • Frontier-class AI models and autonomous agents
  • Unique data assets across science, energy, and security
  • World-class high-performance computing, user, and production facilities
  • National Science and Technology Challenges (formerly Lighthouse Problems)
  • Innovative public–private partnerships.

How PNNL contributes to the Genesis Mission

PNNL plays a central role as a co-lead of the models-focused pillar for the Genesis Mission technical team. PNNL also co-leads the Transformational AI Models Consortium (ModCon), and leads cloud service provider integration on the American Science Cloud (AmSC).

Moreover, PNNL is leading and participating in National Science and Technology Challenge projects that reflect the breadth of our mission: biotechnology, securing the grid, materials discovery, quantum sciences, and environmental management/cleanup.

ModCon: transformational AI models and data
