Frequently Asked Questions
What is GeoIT?
It is a tool designed to comply with NERC’s TPL-007-4 standard for the evaluation and mitigation of GMD events. GeoIT is composed of several modules that assess the different vulnerabilities experienced during GMD events.
Who should use GeoIT?
Grid operators, planners, and researchers.
What are the system requirements?
A computer running Windows, and the latest version of Python.
How do I load external tools like PowerWorld or ETTM?
PowerWorld may be purchased from PowerWorld Corp. Other tools needed for the integrated tool may be acquired from the Electric Power Research Institute, Inc. (EPRI) at no cost, including ETTM and GICharm.
Where can I find documentation on TPL-007?
North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) TPL-007-4 Reliability Standard
How do I troubleshoot installation errors?
For issues with EPRI software, funding members may reach out to EPRI for support. For issues with PowerWorld, license holders will reach out to PowerWorld for support.
Can GeoIT be run without PowerWorld?
GeoIT’s capabilities will be severely reduced without PowerWorld. PowerWorld is used to calculate GIC flows for a given GMD event; without these results, neither transformer heating nor harmonics can be calculated.
What is the config.ini file used for?
During the first use of the GeoIT graphical user interface, the user will be asked to identify paths for external tools such as ETTM and GICharm. These paths will be automatically saved to config.ini by the program; the user should not need to directly interact with config.ini during normal use of the tool.
Are there any training materials or demo cases available?
A manual, along with a step-by-step presentation on use of the GUI, are included in the GeoIT installation package. Both guide a user through an initial demonstration case using magnetic field data and power system models that are included in the installation package. More training materials will be available in the future.
