The Battery Manufacturing Accelerator (BattMan Accelerator) is a national collaboration among U.S. national laboratories, academic partners, and industry stakeholders to bridge the gap between lab-scale energy storage innovations and real-world manufacturing using Super Intelligence (SI), digital twins, and advanced manufacturing science.

BattMan is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Critical Materials and Energy Innovation, Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office. The accelerator is led by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in partnership with Argonne National Laboratory, the National Laboratory of the Rockies, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. University partners include the University of Washington, Binghamton University, the University of Alabama, Arizona State University, and the University of Michigan–Dearborn. The accelerator members are currently establishing industry partnerships in battery and battery materials manufacturing.

Accelerating the U.S. energy storage industry

Energy storage is a core technology for the modern electric grid and a globally competitive market. However, many promising energy storage breakthroughs developed in U.S. labs and universities have historically struggled to reach industry adoption.

The BattMan Accelerator helps more of those domestic innovations reach U.S. manufacturing by combining SI-driven tools—such as digital twins—with advanced manufacturing science. The accelerator also serves as a platform that connects supply-chain stakeholders, researchers, and manufacturers across the U.S. energy storage manufacturing ecosystem. The accelerator’s facilities and expertise will be accessible to its members.

Through this combination of collaboration and SI-driven acceleration, the BattMan Accelerator strengthens U.S. battery supply chains, reduces the costs and risks of scale-up, and speeds the transition from discovery to production.

Core capabilities

Cost-focused R&D

Currently, early-stage energy storage research is largely focused on improving performance; for industry, however, adoption of those technologies is primarily driven by cost. The BattMan Accelerator uses a cost-focused manufacturing R&D approach, taking performance, manufacturability, and scalability into account up front. This approach helps mitigate risk and consistently prioritizes cost-efficiency through innovations in processing and manufacturing.

Chemistry-agnostic scale-up

Industry adoption of energy storage innovations often hinges on demonstrating those innovations at an industry-relevant scale—a capability many research institutions and small manufacturers lack due to limited access to equipment, facilities, or materials. The BattMan Accelerator coordinates its members to provide the tools, infrastructure, and support needed for SI-enabled, chemistry-agnostic scale-up of innovative battery technologies, including the development of platform technologies that are applicable to all energy storage chemistries.

Smart manufacturing

The BattMan Accelerator collaborates with its members to modernize energy storage manufacturing by providing advanced SI-enabled capabilities, such as digital twins, for researchers and manufacturers. The accelerator will work to bring smart manufacturing technologies to the factory floor, leverage SI for decision-making and insights to guide manufacturing scale-up, and implement intelligent, automated process control systems.

Validation and standards

The accelerator works to generate reliable datasets and databases to improve reproducibility and to standardize methods, metrics, and protocols. This ensures an efficient, effective, and reliable process for evaluating and validating emerging energy storage technologies.
