[2024 June] Great news! Our year-round Ph.D. intern, Mr. Venkataramani Kumar, just completed defending his Ph.D. dissertation “Intelligent channel estimation and sensing in next-generation wireless networks” this month. Big congratulations from the PNNL team to you, Dr. Kumar! He worked as PhD Intern in 5G Energy FRAME project from May 2022 to December 2023 at PNNL. In addition, on May 31st 2024 he was extended an offer from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez campus as Assistant Professor (Tenure track) in the department of computer science and engineering (CSE) and he will start this role from August 2024. This feat wouldn’t have been possible without the unstinted support of Dr. Feng Ye (PhD Advisor), and PNNL mentors Mrs. Elena Peterson, Dr. Xiaoyuan Fan, Dr. Johnathan Cree, and entire 5G Energy FRAME project team members. This project assisted him greatly in understanding the concept of inter-disciplinary research works. [2024 June] On June 6th, 2024, Dr. Chuan Qin presented a talk titled, “5G Aided Grid Edge Computing and AI enabled Protection Use Case”, as part of 2024 PNNL TechFest in Richland, WA. The presentation provided an overview of 5G capabilities in grid sensor communications, and discussed its application in edge computing to enhance power security. [2024 May] On May 8th, 2024, Dr. Chuan Qin from 5G Energy FRAME project team presented the poster, “Synchrophasor Data Anomaly Detection on Grid Edge by 5G Communication and Adjacent Compute”, at the 2024 IEEE PES T&D Conference and Exposition in Anaheim, CA. Many attendees from utility and academia expressed strong interests in this hardware testing work conducted by PNNL, as well as in the deployment of 5G technology within power system infrastructures.

[2024 February] 13th Publication Accepted! In collaboration with researchers from Temple University and PJM Interconnection, Dr. Xiaoyuan Fan co-authored the paper “Bilevel Nodal Behind-the-meter Solar Disaggregation Under Unexpected Extreme Weather Conditions”, which had been accepted by 2024 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting.
[2024 January] 12th Publication Accepted! Dr. Shaobu Wang led the study on the relationship between the geometrical topology of stable time-delay regions and the control stability analysis of a linear multiple time delay system. The innovative topology analysis and example case study show that the above method is reliable, and enables ultra-low latency coordination and control for the future power grid with ubiquitous power electronics. [2023 November] 11th Publication Accepted! In collaboration with researchers from Temple University and PJM Interconnection, Dr. Xiaoyuan Fan co-authored the paper “Semi-Supervised, Non-Intrusive Disaggregation of Nodal Load Profiles with Significant Behind-the-Meter Solar Generation”, which had been accepted by IEEE Transactions on Power Systems. [2023 November] On Nov. 16th-17th, Dr. Xiaoyuan Fan hosted a two-day visit by the academia collaborators from George Washington University (GWU), including Prof. Payman Dehghanian and Mr. Jinshun Su, as part of National Science Foundation (NSF) Non-Academic Research Internships for Graduate Students (INTERN) program facilitated by GWU team and PNNL 5G Energy FRAME project (funded by DOE Office of Science Advanced Scientific Computing Research program). Mr. Jinshun Su was also supported by this program and stayed with PNNL as visiting researchers since Summer 2023. [2023 November] On Nov. 7th, Dr. Xiaoyuan Fan hosted a technical panel “Data-enriched Grid Modeling of End-user Profiles, Energy Equity, and Situational Preparedness”, the panel is part of 2023 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Latin America (2023 ISGT LATAM) held in the San Juan, Puerto Rico on November 6-9, 2023. Dr. Xiaoyuan Fan and three panelists participated in this panel, Prof. Liang Du from Temple University, Dr. Kendall Parker from PNNL, Prof. Marcel J. [2023 October] Publication Accepted! PNNL 5G Energy FRAME team’s paper, “A Scalable Transmission and Distribution Co-simulation Platform for IBR-heavy Power Systems”, had been accepted by the 8th IEEE Workshop on the Electronic Grid (eGrid 2023) and presented by Prof. Johan H. Enslin from Clemson University. eGrid 2023 was held on October 15-18th, 2023 at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) - one of the leading Technical Universities in Germany. [2023 September] On Sept. 19th, 5G Energy FRAME project team presented the technical work and cross-domain research ideas to DOE Office of Electricity Advanced Grid Modeling Program. This is part of PNNL Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) overview given by Sector Manager, Dr. Jim Ang, and the two-day sponsor meeting has been coordinated by PNNL Electricity Infrastructure Sector.

[2023 July] on July 19, Dr. Xiaoyuan Fan provided a project briefing, “Integrated Computing and Energy Services through 5G Energy FRAME”, to the visiting guest from NextSilicon.
[2023 May] As part of National Science Foundation (NSF) INTERN Program application, PNNL 5G Energy FRAME research project supported the George Washington University faculty and student in 2023 and the award has been awarded. This collaboration was coordinated with PNNL’s Office of STEM Education, which supports DOE’s mission and committeemen and provides opportunities for students, educators, and the community include exploration of, and excitement for, the sciences via career-focused, hands-on STEM learning experiences. [2023 April] On April 12, Dr. Xiaoyuan Fan hosted a technical panel “5G-enabled Grid Edge for immersive AI applications”, the panel is part of GRID CONNECTIVITY STAGE in the 2023 IEEE PES Grid Edge Technologies Conference and Expo held in the San Diego Convention Center on April 10-13, 2022. Four panelists from academia and industry participated in this panel, Dr. Mauricio Subieta from Nokia, Prof. Yilu Liu from University of Tennessee Knoxville, Prof. Qiuhua Huang from Colorado School of Mines, Prof. Luigi Vanfretti from Rensselaer Polytechnic institute, shared their professional vision and research work in this domain. [2023 March] 7th Publication Accepted! PNNL 5G Energy FRAME team’s paper, “A Systematic Study to Determine 5G Baseline Performance for Scientific Computing”, has been accepted by IEEE SoutheastCon 2023, Phd candidate Mr. Venkataramani Tiruchirappalli Narayana Kumar, from the research team will be delivering a virtual presentation in this event. [2023 January] The project team congratulates our university collaborator, Prof. Liang Du from Temple University, for his award of 2022-2024 cohort of Offshore Energy Safety Early-Career Research Fellows by The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) Gulf Research Program. [2023 January] 6th Publication Accepted! In collaboration with researchers from University of Massachusetts Lowell, Dr. Xiaoyuan Fan co-authored the paper “A Scalable PDC Placement Technique for Fast and Resilient Monitoring of Large Power Grids”, which has been accepted by IEEE Transactions on Control of Network Systems.
[2022 November] On Nov. 16, 2022, Dr. Xiaoyuan Fan delivered a webinar to IEEE Smart Grid R&D Committee December Monthly Meeting, he presented 5G Energy FRAME project progress and PNNL Advanced Wireless Communications (AWC) capabilities to committee members worldwide.

[2022 October] Dr. Johnathan Cree, principle investigator for Advanced Wireless Communication at Pacific Northwest National Laboratories was invited to CLSAC 2022 and presented on Challenges in Validating Edge Computing Infrastructure, specifically Mobile Edge Computing as it is envisioned to be deployed in 5G networks. This presentation brought insights from the work performed on the ongoing 5G Energy Frame and CENATE projects funded by DOE. Dr. Cree also participated in a panel with other National Lab individuals and Industry. The conference primarily focused on edge computing as in computing on-board devices that are in the field and this talk brought a wider perspective of edge computing by including Mobile Edge Computing where high performance computing is deployed between a cell site and the cloud providing low latency access to significantly higher compute capabilities. [2022 October] 5th Publication Accepted! PNNL 5G Energy FRAME team’s paper, “A 5G Enabled Adaptive Computing Workflow for Greener Power Grid”, has been accepted by 2023 IEEE Conference on Innovative Smart Grid Technologies (ISGT 2023), the team will join the participants from worldwide in this conference, focus on the theme “Moving to a Self-Driving Grid”, and discuss the different drivers, key enablers, new structures and advanced technologies that will help us move the needle on grid automation. [2022 September] On September 28th, PNNL AWC team and 5G Energy FRAME project team hosted a group of visitors from NERC E-ISAC and DOE CESER Office for research progress updates and in-person tour at the PNNL 5G Innovation Studio. Xiaoyuan Fan, Johnathan Cree, and Elena Peterson coordinated and supported this visit. PNNL participants also included Carl Imhoff and Jim Ogle.
[2022 September] On September 24th, Dr. Xiaoyuan Fan presented PNNL’s research to a group of elementary school students and parents from Arizona Chandler Unified School District through online webinar, the presented work includes 5G Energy FRAME project, power system resilience and renewable energy integration work, and PNNL’s dedicated efforts in STEM volunteering activities.
[2022 August] On August 29th, 5G Energy FRAME project team published the project Year 1 Report, the title is “Technical Characterization and Benefit Evaluation of 5G-Enabled Grid Data Transport and Applications” [PNNL-33221]. An online version will be available soon. In addition, the project team also published its first dataset based on PNNL AWC Testbed with 5G Standalone Configuration [PNNL-SA-177068], and the dataset is available for download and review through the project publication page here.

[2022 June] 3rd Publication Accepted! [2022 June] On June 17th, PNNL AWC team and 5G Energy FRAME project team hosted Mr. David Wells, Senior Advisor and Program Manager in Department of Energy Office of Electricity, for research progress updates and in-person tour at the PNNL 5G Innovation Studio. PNNL participants also included Jason Fuller and Jim Ogle.
[2022 June] On June 7 and 8, the PNNL 5G Energy FRAME project team held the first in-person meeting since the project started in 2021. Their goal was to exchange research progress, coordinate task work and deliverables, and develop a work plan for next fiscal year. This one and half day event opened with remarks from PNNL ASCR Sector Manager Dr. Jim Ang, and highlighted with the in-person tour of the PNNL 5G Innovation Studio. Besides the task report and brainstorming sessions, there were also two invited talks. Dr. Nathan Tallent presented on Cloud Computing and Dr. Yuan Liu talked about T&D Co-sim with 10,000+ IBRs.

[2022 May] On May 26, Dr. Xiaoyuan Fan delivered a webinar with stakeholders from Hewlett Packard Lab, the presentation title is “Edge to Exascale Orchestration and Pipeline Management: a grid perspective”, this is part of PNNL ASCR Sector outreach activities with HPE in Comprehensive AI for Science.
[2022 May] On May 25, 5G Energy FRAME project team published its first whitepaper, the title is “5G Enabled Transformative Co-design and Co-simulation Framework for Grid Decarbonization and Modernization”. An online version is available here.
[2022 April] On April 21, DOE Office of Electricity Deputy Assistant Secretary Dr. Michael Pesin, along with other DOE visitors and high-profile officials, visited PNNL for the Grid Storage Launchpad (GSL) groundbreaking ceremony. During the visit, our 5G Energy FRAME project and AWC teams worked together to host a joint-presentation and in-person tour through the PNNL 5G Innovation Studio. Xiaoyuan Fan, Johnathan Cree, and Elena Peterson coordinated and supported this visit. PNNL participants also included Carl Imhoff, Henry Huang, Jim Ogle, and Aditya Ashok. [2022 March] Dr. Dexin Wang attended 2022 Battelle Conference of Innovations in Climate Resilience held on March 29~30, 2022. He presented the research progress in 5G Energy FRAME project, and engaged academic and industry stakeholders on how communication technology and energy transformation could support and enhance climate resilience.
[2022 February] 2nd Publication Accepted! PNNL 5G Energy FRAME team’s paper, “Efficient Topology Assessment for Integrated Transmission and Distribution Network with 10,000+ Inverter based Resources”, has been accepted by 2022 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting (PES GM 2022) to be held in Denver, CO this July. The theme of this year’s conference is “Powering a Sustainable Future in a Changing World”, and is the premier annual power engineering conference proudly presented by IEEE PES that will bring together leading power engineers and key academics from all over the world. [2022 February] 5G Energy FRAME team participated in the Large-Scale Application technical panel of 2022 Energy Consequences of Information Workshop, the workshop facilitates cross-pollination across multi-domain technologies, and address challenges in energy optimization and utilization for information processing, including computation, storage, and transfer, within platforms ranging from mobile devices to data centers and supercomputing centers.
[2022 February] Dr. Xiaoyuan Fan was invited to present the ongoing 5G Energy FRAME project and PNNL’s advanced wireless simulation capabilities in the Advanced Wireless Test Platforms (AWTP) Team’s monthly meeting, AWTP is part of the Networking and Information Technology Research and Development (NITRD) Program, which is the Nation’s primary source of federally funded research and development (R&D) in advanced information technologies (IT) in computing, networking, and software.
[2021 December] Dr. Xiaoyuan Fan was invited to present the ongoing 5G Energy FRAME project and potential cross-cutting research ideas at DOE Office of Science XCI webinar, the 90-min presentation was well received, and the feedback from the attendees was also collected to guide the project development.
[2021 November] Publication Accepted! PNNL 5G Energy FRAME team’s paper, “A Data-Driven Democratized Control Architecture for Regional Transmission Operators”, has been accepted by 2022 IEEE Conference on Innovative Smart Grid Technologies (ISGT 2022), the team will join the participants from worldwide in this conference, focus on the theme “Moving to a 3-D Energy Landscape”, and discuss the latest issues, trends, and emerging and innovative technologies for the future decarbonized, democratized, and decentralized, or 3-D, grid.
