Biography
Zach Byrnes is a portfolio and program manager known for his strategic and results-driven approach in the Special Programs and Department of Defense sectors. Byrnes has demonstrated a high proficiency in leading technical programs aimed at enhancing operational efficiencies and safeguarding national interests.
He received his bachelor’s degree in business administration and finance from Gonzaga University in 2008. His pursuit of advanced education led him to the University of Arizona, where he earned his MBA in management information systems and finance in 2017. Byrnes is currently furthering his expertise with an anticipated master of science in global security, conflict, and cyber crime from New York University, expected in Spring 2026.
Byrnes joined Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in 2016 and currently supports the National Security Directorate. Here, he manages multi-year research and development programs exceeding $90 million, overseeing cutting-edge technology deployments, and enhancing integration into strategic missions for the Department of Defense and Intelligence Community. His responsibilities include fostering robust client relationships and leading business development activities in critical communications, cloud integration, and security requirements. Previously, Byrnes was the project manager for the Department of Energy’s Polygraph Program and supported the Office of Radiological Security.
Byrnes’s professional journey began with a significant tenure as an active-duty officer in the United States Army from May 2008 to February 2016. During his service he commanded a military intelligence company and a reconnaissance and surveillance troop in Afghanistan, leading large teams and managing multimillion-dollar assets in combat environments. He attended multiple intelligence schools, including the Counterintelligence Special Agent Course.
Byrnes continues his service in the United States Army Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel at the Joint Intelligence Operations Center, USINDOPACOM. He has led strategic intelligence planning and counterintelligence operations, consistently providing key operational intelligence insights.
