Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Earth scientist ManishKumar Shrivastava was recently appointed to a committee assembled by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. The committee, Anticipatory Research for EPA’s Research and Development Enterprise to Inform Future Environmental Protection: The Road Ahead, will focus on advising the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Research and Development “on emerging scientific and technological advances it could use in support of the agency’s mission for protecting human health and the environment over the coming decades.”
“I am honored by my selection to serve on this prestigious National Academies Committee and look forward to helping identify innovative and interdisciplinary research that will benefit our society,” said Shrivastava, who holds a joint appointment with Oregon State University in the Department of Environmental and Molecular Toxicology, and is also an adjunct professor in chemistry at Michigan Technological University.
The National Academies committee will take a broad perspective on how various technologies intersect with EPA’s mission to protect human health and the environment. The areas under consideration range from data science and climate impacts to environmental sensors. The committee members therefore have diverse experiences and expertise to enable evaluation of the various technologies. Shrivastava’s research spans measurements and modeling of secondary organic aerosols and their broad interactions with atmospheric processes.
Appointments to National Academies committees represent recognition as an outstanding expert in a field.
