A dozen intriguing images that reveal innovative scientific research at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory will be on display in Olympia and Seattle through early April.

The Science as Art images depict advances and discoveries that are being used to improve energy storage technologies, produce biofuels, detect biothreats and more. They were captured using state-of-the-art instrumentation at PNNL, a Department of Energy national laboratory located in Richland, Wash, and can be viewed on PNNL's Flickr page.

The 36-by-48-inch canvass prints will be on display at the Washington State Legislative Building — often called the state capitol building — in Olympia, Jan. 2 through March 3, and at Seattle's Pacific Science Center, March 6 through April 8.

The Legislative Building houses the chambers of the Washington State Legislature and offices of several elected officials. This building is the dominant feature of the state capitol grounds. The Pacific Science Center is one of the nation's premier science museums and is located north of downtown Seattle at the Seattle Center.

The photos are some of the best from the past three annual Science as Art contests at PNNL. Each year, PNNL invites its researchers to submit unique photos, graphics and renderings that are created on laboratory instrumentation. Some of the best are featured annually in a "Science as Art" calendar, and are used in laboratory websites, printed materials, building lobbies and conference rooms.
