Biography

Imagine a landscape of smarter, more efficient homes and commercial buildings that rapidly and automatically negotiate energy use with the power grid, batteries, clean energy sources, and more. This imagined built landscape minimizes energy waste while maintaining building functionality.

Srinivas Katipamula, an internationally recognized building controls expert, helps achieve this vision through his contributions to intelligent and energy-efficient buildings. His expertise has advanced building-grid integration, Building Re-tuning™, next-generation heating and cooling, and economic dispatch. He led the Clean Energy and Transactive Campus (CETC) project, which created transactive energy methods for buildings. CETC has developed tools, such as Intelligent Load Control, that manage building operations, energy use, and grid interactions.

“Smart, efficient buildings not only save energy, but reduce emissions and deliver tangible environmental benefits,” said Katipamula. The environment is a key focus of an award-winning Seattle ordinance that incorporates Katipamula’s Re-tuning™ strategies. The law is designed to reduce energy use in commercial buildings citywide.

Katipamula possesses extensive expertise in advanced design concepts for heating and cooling, automated fault detection and diagnostics (AFDD), and self-correcting controls. His experience also extends to building and energy system simulations, analysis and evaluation of new energy-efficient technologies, and development and use of analytical modeling techniques.

Katipamula is a Fellow in the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He has authored more than 90 papers and 10 book chapters. Two of his AFDD-focused publications remain among the highest-cited papers in an ASHRAE journal.
