Strategize, Engage, Network, Deploy Distributed Wind
The Strategize, Engage, Network, Deploy Distributed Wind (SEND) project uses strategic and technical stakeholder engagement to address technical, economic, market, and performance barriers to distributed wind. Through the development of the Distributed Wind Network and Resource Hub, this project directly aims to increase deployment of wind technologies in distributed applications. In doing so, the project team supports the nation’s decarbonization and energy equity goals while increasing power system reliability and resilience.
In addition to the Distributed Wind Network and Resource Hub, the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) project team aims to increase awareness of distributed wind technologies through a range of ongoing efforts, including the development of decision-making tools and international collaboration.
International Energy Agency Task 41
PNNL is partnered with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in leading IEA Wind Task 41—a task dedicated to sharing information and research activities to advance wind technology as a cost-effective and reliable distributed energy resource in member countries. As part of this effort, PNNL has worked closely with the Technical University of Denmark to develop a distributed wind data catalog for task members. PNNL also collaborated with researchers at Nergica to develop a framework for characterizing the risk of ice fall and ice throw from small wind turbines to help developers address communities’ safety concerns.
