COSTIME: One Platform for Battery Technology Analysis
COSTIME is software designed to help researchers, manufacturers, technology developers, and decision-makers evaluate technical and economic pathways for manufacturing and commercializing next-generation battery technologies

AI-Powered Battery Manufacturing Cost, Supply Chain, and Commercialization Analysis Software
COSTIME integrates battery design, manufacturing cost modeling, materials pricing, supply chain analysis, smart manufacturing, and commercialization assessment within a single analytical framework. COSTIME was developed with funding support from the Department of Energy Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office.
Applications
Battery Design
Evaluate electric vehicle battery pack and energy storage system configurations, including cell counts, series-parallel arrangements, module configuration, dimensions, energy, voltage, component placement, and space utilization.
Materials
Convert battery designs into detailed bills of materials and connect material requirements with pricing information.
Manufacturing Cost Analysis
Use bottom-up costing modeling covering materials, labor, manufacturing overhead, selling, general and administrative expenses, research and development, and profit. Compare manufacturing scenarios and perform sensitivity analyses.
Gigafactory Modeling
Analyze battery manufacturing plants by production zone, including equipment, labor, utilities, production yield, maintenance, insurance, and other factors.
Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) and Manufacturing Energy Analysis
Model HVAC, dry-room, and manufacturing energy requirements as part of the overall manufacturing analysis.
Smart Manufacturing Analysis
Evaluate manufacturing modernization strategy, including humanoid robotics, and examine its relationship to labor requirements and manufacturing economics.
Performance Database
Access a specialist-reviewed database of practical pouch-cell performance datasets for emerging and commercially relevant battery technologies.
AI-Assisted Supply Chain Tracking
Track battery materials toward mineral resources and evaluate critical-material exposure, supply risk, suppliers, and manufacturing dependencies.
AI-Assisted Commercialization Analysis
Combine technical performance and manufacturing economics with AI-assisted market investigation and commercialization timeline analysis.
Professional AI Assistant
Use an integrated AI knowledge environment to investigate battery design, materials, manufacturing, supply chain, cost, and commercialization questions.
Battery technologies supported
COSTIME currently supports five battery technology pathways.
- Lithium-ion battery
- Lithium-metal battery
- Sodium-ion battery
- All-solid-state sulfide-based lithium-ion battery
- All-solid-state sulfide-based lithium-metal battery

Technology commercialization opportunity
COSTIME is freely available to the public and is currently supported on Windows only. A macOS version is under development. Battery designs exceeding 350 watt-hours per kilogram require an export control license key.
Researchers, battery manufacturers, startups, universities, and technology developers are encouraged to evaluate COSTIME and provide feedback to inform future releases.
