Researchers at PNNL are experts at manipulating molecules and customizing chemistries to develop advanced compositions of plastics, ceramics, and metals. PNNL’s self-healing cement repairs itself when cracked or damaged. A finely tuned solvent selectively captures greenhouse gases from industrial waste or directly from the air. Another example is the water-shedding, foul-release coating, a nontoxic material that protects ship hulls, bridges, hydroelectric powerplants, and more from harmful biofouling.
