The U.S. Department of Energy's Wind Energy Technologies Office (WETO) hosted the Wind Innovations for Rural Economic Development (WIRED) workshop in October 2018 with support from PNNL and NREL. The goals of the workshop were to develop an understanding of 1) what opportunities and challenges face rural electric utilities, considering distributed wind and other distributed energy resources, 2) what research and development pathways could enable wind technology to be more valuable for rural electric utilities, and 3) how DOE, in partnership with utilities and stakeholders, might ease the deployment of distributed wind systems. The report captures the key challenges, opportunities, and potential federal government R&D solutions as communicated by the stakeholder participants.
