Unlocking the Future of Energy Storage: A Roadmap

Abstract

There are significant uncertainties in a high energy storage future. In today’s markets the value proposition of energy storage systems is limited by high costs of deployment, technological constraints in power and energy capacity, and market rules and structures which silo the services energy storage can provide—but technological advancements and increasing deployments of energy storage are shifting market paradigms. In this research we develop a roadmap from current to future challenges which need addressed to facilitate a high energy storage future. We consider emerging recommendations from the literature, markets, and leading experts on potential solutions for changing market structures and operations to unleash the potential future of storage.
