This article summarizes the convergence of sequential injection-renewable separation columns (SI-RSC) and techniques with nulceic acid analysis at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. New renewable microcolumn designs, functional principles and their analytical and practical utility are presented within the context of automated nucleic acid extraction and purification from environmental samples.
