A PtSn catalyst was synthesized by a microemulsion method with N-doped hollow silica spheres as the support. This novel catalyst exhibited higher specific activity (279.65 gAcOH gPt-1 h-1) than that of PtSn/SiO2 (210.60 gAcOH gPt-1 h-1) in the gas-phase hydrogenation of acetic acid to ethanol, due to the enhanced surface exposure of Pt sites by N doping.
