In this study, investigations are focused on the interactions between AB and lithium imide (Li2NH) and lithium nitride (Li3N). Since the nitrogen atom in Li2NH or Li3N is more electron donating than NH3 in AB, we expected nucleophilic displacement to form Li2NH-BH3 and Li3N-BH3, respectively, however, we observe a completely different reaction pathway involving the apparent metathesis to yield LiAB and NH3. In a subsequent reaction the ammonia reacts with LiAB to release ca. 10.5 wt% of hydrogen at a temperatures as low as 45 ?C.
