Integration of Distributed Energy Resources for Microgrid

Abstract

This paper discusses the integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) for microgrid development at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Sequim campus. It discusses selecting appropriate standards and protocols for generation and loads, along with establishing a communication and control framework essential for microgrid integration. The communication and control framework was designed using two controllers: SEL RTAC and VOLTTRON. SEL RTAC gathers data from Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), photovoltaic (PV) systems, and other renewable sources, managing their charging and discharging to ensure stable, reliable operation in both islanded and grid-connected modes. Meanwhile, VOLTTRON manages building and electric vehicle (EV) loads for efficient operation of the microgrid. Additionally, Additionally, VOLTTRON stores data from SEL RTAC and loads into a PostgreSQL database. Finally, the paper outlines potential use cases for performance testing of distributed energy assets and the entire microgrid.
