Thirty-six pre-automotive market segments were examined to determine the market opportunity for direct hydrogen polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (H-PEMFC) to 2015. Potential near-term opportunities to 2008 for H-PEMFC identified include public sector emergency response, forklifts in high throughput distribution centers, and baggage tractors at airports. The telecommunications market was not analyzed because it already is a developing market for H-PEMFC. Results of the lifecycle cost analyses show that H-PEMFC offer value over existing technologies for backup power applications for emergency response radio sites when run-times of 1-3 days are required and in harsh environments which can shorten the life of batteries. For longer run-times, hydrogen fuel cost and tank rental significantly impact the competitiveness of H-PEMFC for radio sites.
