A High-Fidelity Medium Office Baseline Model for Evaluating the Impact of Design Decisions and Occupant Behavior on Lighting Control Performance
Abstract
Reference building models can serve as a common baseline for research investigating the impact of new technologies, system architecture, control strategies, equipment choices, and other design decisions. Despite lighting being one of the largest single users of electricity in commercial buildings, lighting systems in reference buildings are com-monly modeled as building-type or space-type power densities defined in building energy codes. In simulations, lighting power is typically modulated over the course of a day via simple occupancy schedules that may not accurately portray the true performance of lighting controls. This paper presents the development of a high-fidelity reference model of a medium office building which includes interior architecture, an occupant model, and a detailed lighting layout intended to support research surrounding occupant behaviors, coordinated lighting and HVAC control strategies, and related sensor tech-nologies.Published: September 30, 2026
