Gut commensals make choline too

Abstract

Hydrolysis of phosphatidylcholine to choline was found to be catalyzed by phospholipase D enzymes in diverse microbiota in the gut, revealing a new mechanism by which commensal microbes obtain choline for subsequent production of disease-associated trimethylamine.
