First Distance-of-Flight Instrument: Opening A New Paradigm in Mass Spectrometry

Abstract

Operation of the first distance-of-flight mass spectrometry (DOFMS) instrument is demonstrated. DOFMS measures the mass-to-charge ratio of ions based upon the distance each ion travels during a fixed time period, and records a mass spectrum with a position-sensitive detector. Initial results are demonstrated with a glow discharge source for atomic ion determination.
