Field-Scale Lysimeter Studies of Low-Activity Waste Form Degradation

Abstract

Before vitrified and cementitious nuclear waste can be disposed of at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Hanford Site Integrated Disposal Facility (IDF), a performance assessment (PA) must be conducted. A field lysimeter is one method capable of confirming that laboratory experiments provide reasonable model parameter estimates for PA release models. Field lysimeters are also useful in demonstrating that release models can accurately predict material degradation in a field environment.
