Lipidomics data generated using untargeted mass spectrometry techniques can offer great biological insight to metabolic status and disease diagnoses. As the communities ability to conduct large scale studies with deep coverage of the lipidome expands, approaches to analyzing untargeted data and extracting biological insight is needed. Currently, the function of most individual lipid is not known; however, meaningful biological information can be extracted. Here, I will describe a step by step approach to identify patterns and trends in untargeted mass spectrometry lipidomics data to assist users in extracting information leading to greater understanding of biological systems.
