Compositionally graded aluminum-silicon alloy fabricated via friction extrusion

Abstract

A novel solid phase gradient alloying method was developed for high throughput compositional screening technique. Friction extrusion of a two-piece billets facilitates a compositionally graded aluminum (Al)-silicon (Si) extrudate, with varying Si composition from 0 at. % at one end to 6 at. % at the other end of the extrudate. It shows that the Al grain size, morphology, and texture are determined by Si concentration. The Si particles pin the grain boundaries resulting in highly refined and textured grains while the Al grains in the low Si region (
