Cloud Detection: One Possible Future in the ARM and EOS Timeframe

Abstract

In this presentation, we discuss problems of cloud detection in the context of the ARM CART active sensors, illustrating the important resutls from an anlaysis of a 9-month data set from the ARM SGP site. We also present preliminiary results from an intercomparison of EOS-MISR and EOS-MODIS prototype cloud detection algorithms when applied to AVHRR local area coverage (LAC) data. Considering all of these results together, we believe one possible, and fruitful, future for cloud detection in the DOE ARM and NASA EOS timeframes emerges.
