Characterizing the Oscillatory Properties of Bulk Electric Systems

Abstract

This paper presents a process of characterizing the oscillatory dynamics of a large modern bulk power grid. As a demonstrative case, the process is applied to the Western Interconnection of North America. Several analysis approaches are utilized to provide a detailed understanding of the oscillatory properties of the system. Critical interarea modes are identified and characterized using actual-system PMU measurements taken over several years of operation as well as simulation models. The Western Interconnection is an excellent test case as it is a very widespread and large system with many oscillatory modes.
