Unsupported Ni3P-CePO4 catalysts were prepared, characterized their catalytic performance in hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) was investigated using aqueous solution of phenol as the feed. The addition of CePO4 resulted in enhanced HDO activity with the maximum activity at a Ce:Ni ratio of 3:10. The CePO4 improved the dispersion of Ni3P significantly and led to enhanced hydrogenation activity. CePO4 provided dehydration sites as well through its surface acidity (mainly Lewis acid).
