Airborne Algae: A Rising Public Health Risk

Abstract

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) not only contaminate the water but are a threat to our air quality. While aquatic regulations exist to manage and mitigate toxic HABs, there are not regulations for airborne HAB toxin concentrations. As climate change worsens, extreme weather events like hurricanes and monsoons will further aerosolize algae, presenting a more significant threat to coastal communities’ public health.
